I grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas and attended the University of Kansas for my bachelor’s degree in Biology, which I completed in 2006 with Distinction (top 10% of the graduating class).

Following the completion of my B.S., I worked for a year for the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service (now the Center for Public Partnerships and Research, also at KU), which manages federal grant money for KU researchers, including pre- and post-award services.

I began my doctoral program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at KU in 2007, working with Dr. Joy Ward. During my PhD work, I was a fellow in both the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship, and the NSF-funded C-CHANGE IGERT program. Through C-CHANGE,  I completed a certificate in Environmental Studies in 2012. I then completed my PhD with honors in 2013.

Following the completion of my PhD, I began a post-doctoral research position at Kansas State University, working on the Novus Research Coordination Network with Dr. Kendra McLauchlan and the Paleoenvironment Lab. I then spent three years teaching introductory biology and botany in the Math and Science Programs at the University of Hawai’i, West O’ahu and at University of Hawai’i, Mānoa.
